During the 2020 pandemic, I watched lots of movies. Lots of HORROR movies. They helped me ease my daily anxiety.

Under this Filmian banner- I will share mini-reviews, recommendations, and thoughts about some of these films.

Up First:

Oily Maniac on IMDB.

THE OILY MANIAC!

This 1976 Shaw Brothers Hong Kong monster/superhero film is based off a Malaysian myth- but clearly shares DNA with both SWAMP THING and TOXIC AVENGER.

It is sleazy: featuring hyman repair surgery for prostitutes; a “he said/she said” court testimony on a sexual assault; a stomped on crushed head death; breasts; rape; sword fighting; a sleazy lawyer; a botched boob job; amazing 70’s fashions; stop motion animation; wide angle barrel distortion; and the titular monster- who often appears as a traveling puddle of black goo (actually- an interesting special effect animating a matte shape instead of a full animation/practical one).

It also steals the John Williams JAWS’ score.

Not for the easily triggered! But for everyone else who thrill seeks something new, or for anyone who wants to feel superior by judging the movie through a 2020 hindsight lens and seeing how “ignorant” people were in the 70’s.

Magritte Moment won the award for Best Short Film. It’s a great festival and they did a great job for their first year.
